A vast selection of woodworking projects are available for the do-it-yourselfer or for anyone who enjoys the feeling of satisfaction that comes from making something with your own hands. The building activity you select should be guided by your skill level, start with the easier tasks and work your way up to bigger and better projects. Before you begin any woodworking project it is a good idea to become familiar with the tools of the trade and how to use them. Once that has been taken care of, you can get an idea of what task you may like to take on.

  1. A very practical thing to build that can be useful in your house or garage is a shelf or shelving unit. Depending upon your ambition, you may want to begin with a single hanging shelf and see how that works out. With any project that you take on, it is a good idea to see what supplies are going to be needed to complete your build. Having ample products on hand will eliminate the need of stopping part way through an activity due to a lack of material. Shelving may be single tiered or multi-tiered depending upon your specific design.
  2. Storage organizers are a nice thing to build, they serve a much needed purpose and can be constructed to accommodate any size and configuration. Outside of the basic design, you can truly make this unique by incorporating your own storage needs. You could make an area for a cooler or mini-bar or just a place to put your things neatly. You can add a nice stain and build the cabinet to match any current decor.
  3. For the more enthusiastic builder, a cedar potting bench would make a nice gift for any gardener, or just to have as a convenience for your own planting needs. Again, as long as basic design patterns are followed for structural support, there are modifications that could be incorporated to suit this to your needs.
  4. Woodworking is not always complex, a less involved build would be a birdhouse that can still feature complexities, and picture frames. Much of what you will do is going to be determined by the tools you have available and those you are willing to buy. These smaller projects can have some intricacies that will require specialized tooling. You or someone else will be pleased with the end results though, and that makes it all worth the while.
  5. Perhaps you have a son or daughter who would love for you to build them a tree house or a fort. This type of project is a bit more time consuming, but imagine how good you will feel when they present you with that beaming smile that says they appreciate what you have created for them.

The possibilities are really endless in terms of what can be built. The project may be something as small as a house for birds or as complex as a house for people. You will be able to determine what scale you want to work on, and how much time you wish to spend on projects. Like Leroy Jethro Gibbs of NCIS, you may construct a boat as a labor of love, or you may just stick to smaller creations. The point is have fun at what you are doing, do not be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck, and let your imagination take you to new heights of your ability.
